John DeFrancis wrote a Conversation Series and a Reading Series for learning Chinese as a part of the Yale Linguistic Series. The Conversation Series included Beginning Chinese, Intermediate Chinese, and Advanced Chinese. For each level there was a Transcription version, and a separate Character version.
