Molly Spotted Elk [Mary Alice Nelson] Katahdin: Wigwam's Tales of the Abnaki Tribe and A Dictionary of Penobscot and Passamaquoddy Words with French and English Translations Description: xxii, 203 pp. Stories about Mt. Katahdin, the origins of corn and tobacco, animal behavior, how the rabbit lost his tail, how mice became small, and numerous others fill this volume. The author, born Mary Alice Nelson in 1903 on Indian Island is best known by her public entertainer persona "Molly Spotted Elk." In addition to working as a dancer and an actress, she wanted to publish a book of her writings based on Penobscot traditional tales. She set about doing so while in France, but the onset of World War II and the subsequent death of her husband disrupted her publication plans. This volume provides the most comprehensive Penobscot dictionary written and published by a Penobscot author.
